Brazilian Sports Minister Makes Moves To Create National Women's League

Brazilian Sports Minister George Hilton met with Minister of the Secretariat of Policies for Women Eleonora Menicucci and discussed "forming a national women's football league to help the sport's development," according to ESTADÃO. Hilton: "The idea would be to create a specific league, with the help of various parties, so that we have a professional competition every year. But it needs to be a smaller structure, and we need to continue with the help of Caixa Econômica [Bank], the true partner of the sport. We've made big steps in the discussion of this proposal and we need your support, Minister Eleonora, to help enable this." The meeting also held discussions about the "course of construction of the Center for Excellence for women's football," which is being built in the city of Foz de Iguaçu and "will be the home of Brazilian women's football." Menicucci said, "We want to give continuity to the work that is being done in partnership with the Sports Ministry. It's extremely important for the agenda of women in the sport. They (the women) are such leaders, but they don't rely on deserved recognition" (ESTADÃO, 5/6).
