Spanish Government Approves Of Law To Regulate Centralized Sale Of LFP TV Rights

The Real Decreto law that will regulate the centralized sale of Spanish Football League (LFP) TV rights was passed at a meeting of Spanish government officials on Wednesday and approved on Thursday after three hours of talks, according to Jiménez & Matilla of AS. After "numerous disagreements, fights over the ownership of the rights and threats to strike from the clubs, the law finally sees the light." What will "come next is the opening of the competition for the rights." LFP President Javier Tebas promised it will be transparent and that the LFP expects to receive €1B ($1.12B). Of this sum, 93% will go to the clubs. Although teams already have deals with operators -- Mediapro and Telefónica -- for '15-16, the collective sale could begin the following season. Of the amount allocated to the clubs, 10% will go to the Spanish second division. Of the 90% going to La Liga clubs, 50% will be distributed in linear form -- 25% based on on-field results and the other 25% based on generation of revenue. But "no club will be able to receive more than 20% of this." The plan will improve the current ratio between the club receiving the most and the least of 1-to-6.5 to 1-to-4.5 in the first year under the deal, and to 1-to-3.5 by the fourth year (AS, 4/30).
