Queensland Reopens Hostilities Over State Of Origin Eligibility Rules

Hostilities "have reignited over State of Origin eligibility rules, Queensland claiming that birthright should trump all other criteria when determining which state a player represents," according to Honeysett & Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Queensland Rugby League Chair Peter Betros "went on the offensive again after Queensland born and bred South Sydney halfback Luke Keary was selected to play for the City Origin team." Betros said, "We’re considering our best avenue of approach to the problem. Weight should be given to wherever you are born in the final criteria. Where these players were born should overrule everything else if there is a dispute. In this case, the player has been part of the Queensland system. He stated publicly some time ago that he’s a Queenslander. You can’t imagine why NSW would want to pick him anyway." The National Rugby League "moved to tighten eligibility guidelines following a threat to Test football after New Zealand-born players chose State of Origin over their country of birth because of the richer spoils on offer" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 4/29).
