Media Notes: Paddy Power Courts Controversy With African American Beatings Tweet

The bookmaker Paddy Power "again courted controversy with a tweet before Monday night’s meeting between Newcastle and Liverpool at Anfield." The words "Newcastle have suffered more Kop beatings over the last 20 years than an unarmed African-American male" resulted in "a furious backlash on Twitter from users." While many have labeled the ads racist, others "have just seen it as the latest wilfully offensive publicity campaign by the bookmaker" (London GUARDIAN, 4/13). ... The Indian Premier League and Twitter have come together for the eighth season to bring new products to cricket viewers. Cricket enthusiasts and IPL aficionados who are online or offline, watching on any type of device or screen -- including the Twitter mobile app -- will all be able to participate (IPL). ... Prime Focus Technologies and deltatre will provide an end-to-end live sports OTT platform. The framework is designed to exploit the most important aspect of live sport monetization; driving consumer engagement (deltatre).
