IPL Side Kings XI Punjab Draws Controversy With Condom Shirt Sponsorship

Cricketer Glenn Maxwell said that he does not care what people think -- and that "attitude will be handy" after his Indian Premier League side signed a condom brand as a shirt sponsor, according to FOX SPORTS. With its popularity among young males, it is "fair to say sport and condoms are a good fit." But that did not stop a minor controversy breaking out in India "when a condom brand with the rather unfortunate name of ‘Manforce’ sealed a shirt sponsorship deal with Kings XI Punjab." Team Owner Preity Zinta was forced "to defend the move after a story appeared in the Hindustan Times claiming some players were uncomfortable running around with the contraceptive brand on their backs." Zinta: "There are other teams in the league who have advertisement from the same industry. In fact, the players were amused when such news appeared in a certain section of the media" (FOX SPORTS, 4/14).
