Bundesliga Side Werder Bremen, City Fighting Over Security Costs For Northern Derby

Bundesliga club Werder Bremen "is fighting with the city over security costs for its derby with league rival Hamburg SV," according to the SID. Werder CEO Klaus Filbry "has criticized the state senate ahead of Sunday's game." He said, "We understand that it is a special game. However, it is too early to talk about specific details." Filbry "is reacting to an already announced fee notification" of around €300,000 ($320,000). The amount "is based on internal estimates by corresponding authorities, who are expecting to have 1,000 police officers on duty during the game instead of 150 for an average Bundesliga match." In October, the state senate "passed a law enabling the city to charge the club for increased security costs at 'high risk' matches." The German Football League (DFL) and Werder Bremen "intend to not pay any of those charges and announced legal action" (SID, 4/14).
