UEFA Records Annual Revenue Of €1.73B, Net Loss of €42.4M In Year To June

UEFA generated revenue of €1.73B in its "latest financial year to the end of June," according to David Owen of INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL. The figure was "marginally up on the prior year's total" of €1.7B. Broadcasting rights to the Champions League were responsible for the "lion's share of this income," contributing €1.12B, with the Europa League generating a further €225.3M. Commercial rights produced a further €328.5M, up from €313.2M. It not being a European Championship year, the organization reported a net loss of €42.4M, double the prior year's €21.4M, "but better" than the €56M loss budgeted. UEFA tends to "produce a surplus in European Championship years," the next being '16, and a deficit in intervening periods. The body says its aim is to "end each four-year cycle on a balance 'close to zero.'" The Champions League was a "big money-maker for UEFA, generating a positive net result" of €137.3M, up from €128M the previous year. The Europa League, however, produced a negative net result of €21M, against a negative €17.4M in '12-13 (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 4/5).
