Football Notes: U.S. Senators Ask FIFA To Move 2018 World Cup Out Of Russia

A bipartisan group of 13 U.S. senators "has called on FIFA President Sepp Blatter" to move the 2018 World Cup out of Russia. In a letter sent Tuesday and released publicly Wednesday, the lawmakers told Blatter that allowing Russia to play host to the event "inappropriately bolsters the prestige" of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime "at a time when it should be condemned." The senators "also asked FIFA to convene a special meeting to vote on the issue." According to the letter, more than 40 countries "placed sanctions on Russia." The senators wrote keeping the World Cup there in three years "provides economic relief" (L.A. TIMES, 4/2). ... For Saturday's Liga MX game between Chivas Guadalajara and Atlas at Estadio Jalisco, Guadalajara police will provide 1,200 officers for security, and Atlas will provide 500 more private security personnel. During a meeting between the two clubs in March '14, an altercation between fans and police left two officers injured (LA AFICIÓN, 4/1).
