Rio 2016 Football, Volleyball Tickets Higher Priced For Male Competitions

The inclusion of women in sports is one of the IOC's priorities, but even so, there is still a "big difference in the ticket prices for male and female competitions," according to Bianca Daga of ESPN. Tickets for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro "went on sale on Tuesday, and the prices for the volleyball finals, for example, are not the same as they were in London-2012." For the London Games, the price of the cheapest ticket for the volleyball final match was £65 for both the men's and the women's. In Rio, though, "the value of the women's [match] equals 74% of the cheapest men's final ticket," which is R$260 ($81) versus R$350 ($110). Olympic football also has "a discrepancy between the genders." In London, the price was "almost the same" at £30 for the women's final and £40 for the men's. For 2016 Olympic football, the difference "increased considerably": the women's final costs R$210 ($66) while the men's final costs R$380 ($119). The "same trend happens among the most expensive" matches for basketball and boxing as well (ESPN, 3/31).
