Football Notes: UEFA To Decide In May If Georgia-Scotland Will Be Behind Closed Doors

Scotland will discover on May 21 whether September's Euro 2016 qualifier with Georgia "will be played behind closed doors." UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Georgian football federation after fans "twice invaded the pitch during the 2-0 defeat to Germany in Tbilisi." UEFA is also examining claims that home fans "set off fireworks at Sunday's match, while a string of safety breaches, including blocked stairs, locked gates and a lack of body searches at the Boris Paichadze Stadium will also be investigated" (PA, 4/1). ... Poland is facing disciplinary action after problems at a recent Euro 2016 qualifier. UEFA said that Poland was charged after its fans "threw objects during the 1-1 draw away to Ireland" in a Group D match on Sunday (REUTERS, 4/1). ... Fans who bought tickets for the match between Brasileiro sides Nacional and Bahia for the Copa de Brasil "received as a 'surprise' tickets for the Nacional-Paysandu" match during the Copa Verde, which happened last week. To "identify the validity," Nacional "stamped" the backs of the old tickets. The club's "justification" for the stamp was the "ticket production delay and, for that reason, it was necessary to anticipate the sale" by reusing old tickets (GLOBO ESPORTE, 3/31). ... Scottish Championship side Livingston has been fined £5,000 ($7,400) and given a "registration ban for breaking Scottish FA dual interest rules." The club was found in January to have breached four SFA rules "due to majority shareholder Neil Rankine's involvement with East Fife" (BBC, 4/1). ... England U21 Manager Gareth Southgate does not expect Premier League clubs to "oppose the release of players for the European Under-21 Championship." He said that is "not a problem" he has encountered. Southgate: "We've looked after the players physically, and that helps us in terms of their release" (BBC, 3/31).
