FERJ Announces Income Of 2015 Campeonato Carioca, Generates Controversy

The Rio de Janeiro Football Federation (FERJ) published on its official site on Tuesday a side-by-side "comparison of the net income obtained by the clubs" in Rio de Janeiro state in the last three years of the Campeonato Carioca, according to Fábio Suzuki of LANCENET. FERJ's data indicated that all Rio clubs' profit "up until the 8th round of the 2015 Campeonato Carioca" totaled R$944,400 ($302,000) in a "450% increase over last year," which was R$171,600. However, the figure is still "far from reaching" clubs' profits from other Brazilian states. For example, São Paulo state saw Brasileiro side Palmeiras profit nearly R$1.8M ($576,000) in only one game against Capivariano in late February; Palmeiras' profit "was practically twice that announced by FERJ" for the entirety of the Carioca (LANCENET, 3/11). In a separate piece, Suzuki wrote that FERJ's initiative to publish data from the Carioca was "controversial ... in that the clubs made less than the entity [FERJ]" did from the games. Brasileiro side Fluminense recently "pointed out" that the model used to distribute funds among clubs and governing bodies "needs to be rethought because the clubs are at a disadvantage." Fluminense "defended a reduction of FERJ's retained percentage" of profits, stating that FERJ made around R$67,000 ($21,430) revenue off Sunday's match between it and Botafogo, which was about the same amount each of the two clubs made (LANCEPRESS, 3/12).
