Arena Amazônia Generates State Debt Of $1.3M Over Course Of 2014

The Arena Amazônia, a stadium "built by the Amazonas state government for around" R$750M and a maximum capacity of 42,300 people, has accumulated a debt of R$4.1M ($1.3M), according to Vinícius Segalla of UOL. This was the amount "calculated" by Amazonas state when determining "monthly maintenance expenses of the arena," which is R$500,000 ($16,100). According to "data kept by the arena administrator," the Vila Olímpica Foundation (FVO), Amazonas collected R$1.9M in revenue from events over the past year. However, "maintenance costs have been at least" R$6M, leaving a deficit of R$4.1M. The Amazonas government "only posts information of the arena's maintenance," not including that of the facility's two smaller fields and a gym. The "actual" total maintenance cost of the facility is R$700,000 ($22,500) and the deficit "could be even higher" (UOL, 3/11).
