Morumbi Sees Lowest Turnout For São Paulo-Corinthians Match In 11 Years

The 18,000-fan turnout to watch Brasileiro side São Paulo play Corinthians on Sunday for the Campeonato Paulista was the lowest it has been for the rival clubs' matches at the Morumbi stadium in the last 11 years, according to Ciro Campos of ESTADÃO. So far in the '15 season, São Paulo has "played five times ... and it would be necessary to add the total number of people at all these games to achieve the stadium's maximum capacity." The most recent "Morumbi box office number" that was lower than Sunday's was in May '04, when "14,800 people witnessed a tie ... for the Campeonato Brasileiro." While Corinthians and Palmeiras have seen 26,000 and 27,000 people, "respectively," in their home Campeonato Paulista games, São Paulo is "way behind." São Paulo VP Ataíde Gil Guerreiro: "I'm absolutely sure, not even if we left the gates open, the Morumbi would not fill up. We are seeing more people going to Palmeiras and Corinthians games, only because of the novelty of [them] having a stadium. Today, the incentive is to see a new stadium" (ESTADÃO, 3/10).
