Spain's Football League, National Federation Come Together To Call For Government Action

Following their recent public confrontation, "few could have imagined" Spanish Football League (LFP) President Javier Tebas and Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Ángel María Villar "reaching an agreement between the organizations" to pressure the Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) "for the arrival of the anticipated law regulating the centralized sale of TV rights," according to José Miguel de Pedro of LIBERTAD DIGITAL. The RFEF "does not want to lose its percentage" of the sum it receives from the LFP from selling the image rights of the clubs. Villar's organization has in recent weeks "maneuvered to make itself part of the negotiations." First it reminded all parties that, per FIFA regulations, national federations "have jurisdiction over the rights of the clubs competing in domestic competitions." On Friday, at a meeting also attended by the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE), the LFP and RFEF "formed an alliance to join forces against the Government." A joint statement said that an "agreement had been reached to recognize the necessity of developing a model of centralized sale of TV rights, of fair distribution and solidarity with fans." The statement called for the government to "establish mechanisms to guarantee the roles that should be played by the RFEF, the LFP, the clubs and the AFE for the best operation of this model" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 3/9).
