Brazilian Government Plans To Spend $35 Million On Additional Olympic Infrastructure

The Brazilian government will front the funds for the cost of the additional sporting infrastructures, electricity and security for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, according to Souza & Moura of EM RUSUMO. In a meeting on Tuesday with President Dilma Rousseff and IOC President Thomas Bach, Brazil Sports Minister George Hilton said that the sports infrastructure alone will cost "give or take" R$100M ($35M). Security "was one of two main topics of discussion between Rousseff and Bach." Rousseff agreed to "replicate the structures of the federal, state and local police in Rio de Janeiro," a decision which "pleased Bach." Hilton confirmed that the government is also "working on all security both outside (of the sporting arenas) and overall (externally)" (EM RESUMO, 2/25).
