Event Notes: AFC Declares January's Asian Cup In Australia Free Of Match-Fixing

The Asian Football Confederation "gave itself a proud pat on the back on Tuesday after declaring that January's Asian Cup in Australia was free of match-fixing." AFC General-Secretary Alex Soosay: "It is extremely encouraging to see that the detailed integrity planning and collaboration for our premier tournament, the AFC Asian Cup, was a success. The effective implementation of this action plan could be a blueprint for other Asian sporting events and sports governing bodies" (REUTERS, 2/17). ... Four people "were injured when a brawl broke out between cricket fans watching the India-Pakistan World Cup match at a club in Sydney." Police said the fight at the Merrylands RSL club on Sunday night "involved up to 40 people." A police official said, "Four people were taken to hospital with injuries which included lacerations and abrasions" (IANS, 2/16). ... Venues for South Korea's two football friendly matches in March "have been set." The Korea FA announced on Monday that Daejeon World Cup Stadium in Daejeon, about 160km south of Seoul, will host Uzbekistan on March 27. Four days later, Seoul World Cup Stadium will host New Zealand (YONHAP, 2/16). ... The Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) and British Cycling have agreed on the dates for next year's UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London. In order to ensure the best possible TV exposure to the event, all parties agreed to postpone the 24th edition of the open era UCI Track Cycling World Championships by one week. They will now be held from March 2-6 (UCI).
