Bundesliga, Fans Discuss Measures To Help League Generate More Money

Bundesliga CEO Christian Seifert said that the league "may have to consider 'unpopular measures' to generate more money, following the new Premier League TV deal," according to BILD. Bayer Leverkusen GM Rudi Völler talked about Monday night games. Borussia Mönchengladbach Sports Dir Max Eberl said, "3:30pm can't remain a taboo." Nationwide fan initiative "ProFans" said in an open letter that the increasing "fragmentation" of gamedays damages Germany's "unique characteristic" of outstanding atmosphere in sold-out stadiums. During Saturday's games, Bayern fans displayed a banner, which read, "Das ist nicht die Premier League! Nein zum englischen Modell" ("This is not the Premier League! No to the English format"). Asked if the Bundesliga really has to change to make more money, Repucom marketing expert Andreas Ullmann said, "Sports have disintegrated because they haven't had a future-oriented approach." It is the reason why league managers "call for more variable kickoff times." Ullmann: "I don't believe the fans' aversion would be that big if one game would be played on Monday. As long as Saturday remains the main gameday and kickoff remains at 3:30pm. Fans are creatures of habit and the main kickoff time at 3:30pm is a wonderful tradition" (BILD, 2/15).
