Spanish Football League Clubs Call For Urgent Meeting To Negotiate TV Rights

Spanish Football League (LFP) clubs "have run out of patience," according to Gómez & Fernández of MARCA. The clubs have called for a meeting to be held on Friday to negotiate the sale of TV rights. They are "frustrated that the government has not taken forward the Decreto Ley that will regulate the centralized sale of TV rights." The matter "was expected to be resolved in '14, but it did not happen and the deadline was moved to Jan. 29, but now there is no date, and there have been no explanations." The clubs, "which will no longer wait for the government, have called for an urgent League Assembly to be held Friday, in which possible ways to reach an agreement among all 41 clubs will be discussed." Several teams in both La Liga and the Spanish second division, including some of the top clubs, "were willing to consider stopping play until a centralized sale of TV rights became a reality." This will be one of the topics discussed Friday, "but it appears unlikely to be agreed upon, at least not unanimously" (MARCA, 2/3).
