Tokyo To Spend $380M On Hydrogen Stations Ahead Of 2020 Olympics

Tokyo plans to spend ¥45.2B ($380M) "on fuel-cell vehicle subsidies and hydrogen stations for the 2020 Olympics" as part of PM Shinzo Abe’s plan "to reduce the nation’s reliance on nuclear power," according to Hagiwara & Jie of BLOOMBERG. Thirty-five hydrogen fuel stations "will be built in the capital, which is in negotiations with Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. to put 6,000 hydrogen cars on its roads by 2020." The nation "is investing in hydrogen power as it continues to struggle with the aftermath of its worst peacetime nuclear disaster," in '11. Fujitsu Research Institute research fellow Hiroshi Takahashi: "The Olympics are a good opportunity to showcase new technologies. It’s also a significant chance to attract new investment and update the city’s transportation system to make it fuel-cell friendly" (BLOOMBERG, 1/20).
