Former Australian cricket player Stuart MacGill "is suing Cricket Australia" for more than A$2.6M ($2.1M), according to Mark Russell of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD.
In a writ filed with the Victorian Supreme Court on Monday, MacGill, 43, claims CA "reneged on a deal" to pay him more than A$1.6M in match payments and prizemoney.
The right arm leg-spinner, who retired in '08 after playing 44 Tests and taking 208 Test wickets over a decade-long career, is also claiming more than A$984,000 in interest, plus costs.
MacGill claimed CA "had failed or neglected to pay him injury payments over a two-year period" from May '08 when he was unable to play Test cricket due to injury (SMH, 1/19). In Sydney, Pia Akerman reported MacGill "cites a long list of injuries, including fractures, displaced discs and nerve damage in the hands."
He also "lists shoulder and leg pain as complaints" that both arose between '98-06, when he says CA "paid him appropriately," and continued between June '07 and his retirement. MacGill claims the Australian Cricketers’ Association "entered into good faith negotiations with Cricket Australia on his behalf when he failed to receive his payments according to his contract." But CA "allegedly denied liability and refused to refer the matter for mediation, prompting him to take legal action."
CA "has yet to issue any comment on the case" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 1/20).
