Super League Set To Return To London With Games Expected To Take Place In July

Super League "will be played in London this year and next year regardless of what division London Broncos are in," according to Gavin Willacy of the London GUARDIAN. Wigan Warriors Chair Ian Lenagan and Super League GM Blake Solly "both confirmed that they are sure a major Super League event will take place in the capital" -- maybe as soon as this summer. Solly: "It’s somewhere between an idea and a plan. We’ve had discussions with a few clubs who are interested. ... The sport shouldn’t be afraid of trying different things and taking a big game to London should be on the agenda." Expect it to be in July, "when football pitches need a rest, although it will not necessarily be a Wigan home game that will be switched." Having seen "the success in rugby union," where Harlequins and Saracens "have attracted huge crowds by marketing regular league games as special events, other major Super League clubs are also keen on the idea." Wigan is "starting to up the ante in the capital." Lenagan admitted the club was "committed to increasing awareness of Wigan Warriors in London and developing their profile" as the south-east is "an important market for us" (GUARDIAN, 1/19).
