Ecuadorian Football Federation Head Requests Help From Ecuador President Correa

Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) President Luis Chiriboga "is opposed to the government intervening in the body's election process" -- claiming that FIFA could suspend Ecuador and its clubs from int'l tournaments -- but "requested help from the government and President Rafael Correa," according to EL UNIVERSO. Chiriboga "is seeking a fifth term as FEF president." He said, "We will do everything to defend Ecuadorian football. I am sure that our president knows this, as he is a lover of democracy who wants independence for football. ... He was recognized by CONMEBOL and FIFA as an example for presidents of other countries for his respect for the autonomy of football. I am sure that the top judicial authorities already know this" (EL UNIVERSO, 1/13).
