Event Notes: UBA All India Inter-Zonal Tournament Entering Final Stretch

The largest university basketball tournament in the world, the UBA All India University Inter-Zonal Basketball Championship, is entering its final stretch. Out of the 214 university teams that started the tournament, the remaining 16 will meet at Sathyabama University in Chennai to crown a champion on Monday (UBA India). ... Ahead of the Men's Handball World Championship, which will start on Thursday, host nation Qatar has invited approximately 30 fans of the Spanish team to attend the event, "with the Qatari federation covering transportation, meals and lodging." The goal is to "avoid having a cold atmosphere at the stadiums." There are "no official figures on how many fans have been invited," but the objective is to "make sure the arenas do not appear empty" (AS, 1/12). ... The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation on Monday officially submitted its candidacy documentation for the hosting of the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship to the Int’l Ice Hockey Federation. Switzerland will compete with Zurich as the main venue and Lausanne or Zug as potential second venues for the implementation of the nearly three-week tournament from April-May ’20 (Infront). … Doubt has been cast over “the future of major darts championships in Melbourne after an incident during which plastic chairs were hurled” and people were reportedly “body-slammed into tables during a match at the Etihad stadium." The incident reportedly began when "some in the crowd started trying to build a pyramid of plastic furniture." Witnesses said people "were then body-slammed into tables and groups of attendees brawled with each other" (London GUARDIAN, 1/11).
