Mexican Olympic Committee Boss Expresses Interest In Joint Bid With U.S. For 2024

The "simple idea" of San Diego and Tijuana "jointly hosting the Olympics" arose nine years ago, but in '15 it could become a 'formal proposal," according to Carlos Cruz of LA AFICION. The Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) "is willing to talk with the U.S. with the goal of landing a bid for 2024." COM President Carlos Padilla said, "There is a project of several years that Tijuana and San Diego are planning and the studies are very serious. We have hopes of holding the Olympics in Mexico. I will next year have a meeting, because we have agreed to this, with the president of the USOC with the goal of making a joint bid." Baja California Sports Dir Saúl Castro said that Baja California Governor Francisco Vega de Lamadrid "recently met with the border coalition to address the subject of an Olympic bid." Castro: "At this meeting the governor said that we should begin more formal studies to present this bid, aspects like diagnosing the area, the infrastructure and everything that would be required." Padilla said, "We will start the process and see what possibilities we have with this proposal, but here what is important is that the IOC recently officially approved of bids by joint countries; reactivating the Tijuana-San Diego project. Now the key is for the COM and the USOC to begin communicating to start the bid, as if this does not happen, the bid will not be carried out" (LA AFICION, 12/17).
