Event Notes: Equatorial Guinea Hires 50 Cuban Doctors To Fight Ebola Outbreak

Equatorial Guinea has hired 50 Cuban doctors as part of the fight to "contain the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus during the Africa Cup of Nations next year, according to an official source." The west African country took over the organization of the continental football tournament at the 11th hour last week when Morocco was "stripped of the right to host the event after it expressed fears over the deadly virus." The national Ebola watchdog body in Malabo and the Cuban embassy have signed an agreement to recruit "50 Cuban doctors for three months" with a view to "tightening procedures in the run-up to the January championships" (AFP, 11/19). ... Ostrava, Czech Republic will stage the Int'l Association of Athletics Federation's third Continental Cup in '18 after beating rival Bydgoszcz, Poland in Tuesday's vote of the IAAF Council in Monaco. The dates of the 2018 Continental Cup have yet to be fixed, but it is expected to be held in early September (INSIDE THE GAMES, 11/18). ... Int'l Paralympic Committee Powerlifting announced that Mexico City will stage the 2015 IPC Powerlifting Americas Open Championship from April 26-29, replacing the original host city of Guadalajara. The event will be open to all countries to ensure athletes have opportunities to qualify for Rio 2016 (IPC). ... Bahrain and the UAE have informed the Int'l Handball Federation yhey wish to "abandon their respective withdrawals from the 2015 Men's World Championships in Qatar." The IHF confirmed the two federations have each "expressed their preparedness and wish to participate." The U-turn comes days after the two nations announced plans to "skip the event in what was widely interpreted as a political boycott of their Gulf neighbour, although no specific reasons were given" (INSIDE THE GAMES, 11/19). ... The 2015 Dakar Rally -- the 37th edition of the race and the seventh to be held in South America -- will bring back the loop format with a course starting in Buenos Aires on Jan. 4 and ending in the same city on Jan. 17. The 414 vehicles on the start list and their drivers and riders will tackle over 9,000 km of roads, tracks and dunes in their quest through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia (Dakar Rally).
