Football Notes: Euro 2016 Organizers Unveil 'Boy In A Cape' As Official Tournament Mascot

Euro 2016 organizers have unveiled the official mascot for the tournament -- an as yet unnamed boy in a cape. The new mascot will remain nameless until Nov. 30 despite making his first public appearance at the France-Sweden match at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille on Tuesday. After his grand unveiling a public competition will be open until Nov. 26 to decide on the name which will subsequently be announced at the end of the month (London GUARDIAN, 11/18). ... A young Culpeo fox "who loves football" has been chosen as the official mascot of the 2015 Copa America in Chile on Monday, but its name is “still to be determined.” According to the official website of the 2015 Copa America, the reason to choose a Culpeo fox as the mascot is that "it could be found throughout Chile and South America, living in many different places" on the continent. Fans are invited to vote for the names of the mascot, with three options on offer: Zincha, Andi and Kul (XINHUA, 11/17). ... Disciplinary proceedings were opened Tuesday against the Italian Football Federation and the Croatian Football Federation after the "incidents that marred" the Euro 2016 qualifying match between the two countries Sunday. Croatia is being prosecuted for "racist behavior by fans, fan misbehavior and throwing projectiles and smoke bombs." Italy is accused of using smoke bombs. The cases will be examined by the UEFA disciplinary committee on Dec. 11 (SPORT 24, 11/18).
