Football Federation Australia On Mission To Make Game Country's Top Sport

Football Federation Australia CEO David Gallop said that the organization "has placed a strategic importance on modified versions of the sport, including futsal and six-a-side twilight leagues, to build on the ground the A-League has made on cricket," according to Daniel Lane of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. The Western Sydney Wanderers' triumph at the Asia Championship League, strong crowds, booming TV ratings, tribalism and a young, energetic supporter base "has football confident it can one day end cricket's dominance as summer's No.1 sport." Gallop: "We're definitely ambitious about football." The latest stage in the FFA's master plan "is to promote modified versions of the code to engage supporters of all ages and abilities in a form of football at a time of year they might otherwise be playing park cricket." Gallop: "The grassroots season is entrenched [in winter], but a lot more kids and adults are taking up futsal, indoor and other summer options [including a six-a-side twilight competition] and that's something we're concentrating strategically on." The rapid growth in popularity for football "has not gone unnoticed by some of cricket's leading identities, who concede the onus is on Cricket Australia to continue to address some issues." Pace bowler Brett Lee said that CA "needed to reconsider children's admission prices to international matches; former Test captain Mark Taylor admitted football's global appeal was a constant threat; while former wicketkeeper Ian Healy observed cricket had no relevance to many newly arrived immigrants" (SMH, 11/13).
