The Confederation of African Football said that the new hosts for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations "will be named in 'two or three days,'" according to the BBC.
CAF President Issa Hayatou "revealed the timeframe." Hayatou added that the tournament dates remained Jan. 17-Feb. 8.
There "has since been speculation that Angola could step in as replacements." But Angola Football Federation exec committee member Joao Lusevikueno said, "Angola is definitely not hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015. Even though the infrastructure is there -- the stadiums, the hotels -- you need at least two or three years to prepare the country to host a major tournament like that" (BBC, 11/12). ALL AFRICA reported South Africa and Ghana "have announced they will not be hosting next year's competition, but speculations have been rife about likely new hosts with Angola, Gabon and Nigeria widely mentioned." Nigeria "would be a very likely destination as they were on the standby for previous tournaments." But the '15 edition "will be around the country's general elections and with the country's government having a very big say on whether or not to host, Nigeria may also pass on this chance." Egypt, which has hosted the best African teams four times with the most recent being in '06, has "also been touted, but the security situation caused by the unrest in the country may well be a big challenge" (ALL AFRICA, 11/11).
