FIFA Report Into World Cup Bids Reportedly Implicates U.K. Officials

FIFA will reveal some of the conclusions from the "Garcia Report" -- U.S. attorney Michael Garcia's investigation into the bids to host the World Cup in ’18 and ’22 -- in 10 days, according to Joaquín Maroto of AS. Sources said that "the conclusions do not compromise Qatar." The same "cannot be said for Russia or England." The FA appears "several times throughout the 430-page report in which Garcia summarizes his investigation." The U.K.'s football body is cited for "giving leather items from prestigious retailer Mulberry to members of FIFA's exec committee during a visit to London, for sponsoring a meeting of the Caribbean FA and for a suspicious meeting in Johannesburg" during the 2010 World Cup. England "lost to Russia and Qatar" in its bid. The doubts regarding Qatar have to do with former FIFA VP Mohamed Bin Hammam, who was accused of "making dozens of payments totalling more than $5M to senior football officials" (AS, 11/6).
