Horseracing "has installed a senior Ladbrokes director to run the sport’s regulator." NICK RUST "has been appointed chief executive for the British Horseracing Authority." He "leaves his post as Ladbrokes’ retail director in April." Rust "will have to negotiate with a betting industry worried about growing government support for racing and wider political concern about the harmful effects of gambling" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 11/5). ... Italy's World Cup winning captain FABIO CANNAVARO "was formally unveiled as the new coach" of Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande Wednesday, replacing his former national team Manager MARCELLO LIPPI. Lippi said he would retain the title of "head coach." But 41-year-old Cannavaro would take over responsibility for the team's day-to-day affairs as the club's new "executive head coach." Lippi: "There might be some misunderstanding about what I said before, that I would give up and ditch the team" (AFP, 11/5).

INTO AFRICA: Fox Int'l Channels has named former Wananchi Programming Managing Dir HANNELIE BEKKER as managing director of FIC Africa. Bekker, who will be responsible for all FIC brands in Africa, including Fox, Fox Crime, Fox Movies, FX, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild, National Geographic Gold, Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2 and Baby TV, will be based in FIC’s Johannesburg office and will report to ADAM THEILER, executive vice-president for southern Europe and Africa (DIGITAL TV EUROPE, 11/5). ... Former FA CEO BRIAN BARWICK is to become the new chairman of the Football Conference at the end of the season. Barwick, "who previously held senior sport posts with the BBC and ITV," will continue in his role as non-exec chairman of the Rugby Football League. Barwick will succeed BRIAN LEE, who has held the position for eight years (BBC, 11/5).

RAFTER JOINS TA: Former world No. 1 and dual US Open champion PAT RAFTER “is to become Tennis Australia’s new director of performance, one of the most powerful roles in professional tennis.” Rafter will report directly to TA CEO CRAIG TILEY. Rafter “is expected to continue as Australian Davis Cup captain before eventually passing the baton” to LLEYTON HEWITT. Rafter “will start in his new role in February” (HERALD SUN, 11/5).
