Spanish Tennis Federation Faces Audit From Spanish Superior Sports Council

Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) President José Luis Escañuela "has on the table" a letter from Spain's Superior Sports Council (CSD), dated Oct. 17, in which it is revealed that "the Federation will face an audit on operations that have not been sufficiently justified," according to Jesús Mínguez of AS. In "doubt is the destination" of €600,000 ($760,200) allocated to the Tennis Observatory, the Spanish Tennis Foundation and proceeds from the Davis Cup, "with special attention" on the semifinal against France and the final against Argentina, both in '11. The Tennis Observatory was created through an initiative led by Escañuela in '10 in collaboration with Universidad Pablo de Olavide de Sevilla, to which €300,000 was allocated for the "investigation, promotion and study of tennis from scientific, economic, legal, business and social perspectives." The Spanish Tennis Foundation was also born in '10, "with private funding, per the RFET." This is an "aspect the CSD debated," as the RFET received public funds. The RFET closed '13 with a deficit of €321,533 (AS, 10/25).
