Atlético Madrid Closing In On 2014 Total Home Attendance Of 1 Million After 22 Games

Atlético Madrid's Vicente Calderón stadium is expecting a crowd of more than 50,000 for Sunday's La Liga match against Espanyol, and "more importantly, this will give the club combined attendance at home games in '14 of more than 1 million," according to F.J. Díaz of AS. The club has drawn a total of 979,600 fans to its first 21 "official competitions" this year. Atlético has filled its stadium five times -- twice for La Liga matches and three times for Champions League contests. The club also filled the stadium to 99% of capacity once, against Málaga, and filled more than 90% of capacity for four other games. These figures "mean the average crowd at games in '14 has been 46,648 -- said in another way, the club has filled its stadium to an average of 86% of capacity, one of the highest figures in European football" (AS, 10/15).
