New South Wales Open To Cricket Draft Plan; Players Object

Australia's "biggest producer of cricketing talent, New South Wales," would not object if some of its "most precocious players were sent to other states as part of a national draft," according to Jesse Hogan of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Players, however, "would stridently oppose such a plan." Cricket NSW GM of Cricket Performance David Moore said that its goal to prioritize the national team would mean it would not seek to block Cricket Australia "implementing a policy where young players were effectively billeted out across the states." Moore said, "I think everyone in Australian cricket embraces that idea of one team. We all want to win the Sheffield Shield, we all want to win the Matador Cup, we all want our franchises to win BBL, there's no doubt about that. But obviously there's no greater honor for any player and any state [they are from] ... to play for Australia." However, if CA pushes ahead with its draft proposal "it would face stiff opposition from the Australian Cricketers Association." ACA Cricket Operations & Membership Manager Graham Manou argued that cricket's current model, where players can seek higher honor in their home state or move to a rival state of their choice for greater opportunity, was "the envy of other sports" (SMH, 10/14).
