Blackpool Chair Karl Oyston Says Rooney Rule In English Football Would Be An 'Insult'

EPL side Blackpool Chair Karl Oyston said introducing the Rooney Rule into English football would be an "insult to people" in the sport, according to the BBC. The rule requires NFL franchises "to interview at least one black or ethnic minority candidate for senior coaching jobs." Oyston said, "To think skin colour is a consideration is ridiculous. Appointments have to be on merit." Professional Footballers' Association CEO Gordon Taylor "wants the rule adopted in English football." But Oyston, who appointed the club's first black manager, former boss Paul Ince, in Feb. '13, added, "I have to say it is an absolute insult to people in football. I don't think I've come across any institutional racism in football, certainly not at Blackpool" (BBC, 10/14).
