Bundesliga Side SC Freiburg To Invest $88M In New 35,000-Seat Stadium

Bundesliga side SC Freiburg has unveiled plans to invest €70M ($88M) in the construction of a new stadium, "which will be co-financed by the city of Freiburg," according to Jaroslaw Adamowski of INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL. The club said in a statement that it is aiming to launch the project in '15. In total, the "stadium and related infrastructure spending" are to cost about €108M ($136M). Under the plan, "the stadium will have a seating capacity of about 35,000." The next stage is for the citizens of Freiburg to "approve the plans via a referendum" scheduled for Feb. 1. If "successful, project construction will be launched next year." The day-to-day operations of the facility are to be financed by SC Freiburg. Under the terms of the deal, the German side is to allocate €3.8M ($4.8M) per year "to this end if the side remains in the Bundesliga." If the club is "relegated to the second tier, the amount will be decreased" to €2.5M ($3.2M) per year (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 10/10).
