MANAGERS/COACHES: Former Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion Manager ROBERTO DI MATTEO "has been appointed as the new manager" of Bundesliga side Schalke. The Italian, 44, succeeds JENS KELLER "following the Bundesliga club's inconsistent start to the season." Schalke is 11th in the league "with eight points from seven games, having won just twice." Di Matteo is set to face Chelsea "when the two teams play the reverse fixture in Germany" on Nov. 25. This is Di Matteo's first job "since being dismissed" by Chelsea in Nov. '12 (BBC, 10/7). ... Former Chelsea midfielder SLAVISA JOKANOVIC has become League Championship side Watford's fourth manager of the season, bringing BILLY MCKINLAY's "reign to an end after only eight days." McKinlay replaced ÓSCAR GARCIA at the end of September after the former Brighton manager, who had replaced GUISEPPE SANNINO following his resignation, "had suffered a health scare." Hornets Owner GINO POZZO "has now dispensed with McKinlay after just two games at the helm because he feels he needs an experienced manager with a proven track record." Pozzo said, "Our job is always to act in the best long-term interests of this football club. There can be no compromise on this -- whatever the circumstance" (PA, 10/7). ... Australian Football League side Adelaide Crows named former Port Adelaide assistant coach PHIL WALSH as its senior coach. Walsh, 54, "has been handed a three-year contract." He "replaces sacked coach" BRENTON SANDERSON. Walsh "spent four years at West Coast as strategy and innovation coach before taking care of the Power's midfield last season." He "is regarded as playing a pivotal role in Port Adelaide's first and only AFL premiership in 2004." Walsh's departure means Port coach KEN HINKLEY "has lost a key assistant for the second time in 10 months," with ALAN RICHARDSON "having quit the club last November" to take the top job at St. Kilda (THE AGE, 10/7).
