May 2011 Levante-Zaragoza La Liga Clash Under Suspicion For Match-Fixing

Spain's Anti-Corruption prosecuting attorney has summoned 20 players to declare over "possible game-rigging and illegal betting acts" related to a May '11 La Liga game between Zaragoza and Levante, according to MARCA. Of the 20 players that have been "summoned to declare, some of them have already been accused of illegal activity, although as yet their identities are unknown" (MARCA, 9/25). MARCA reported in a separate piece Zaragoza has published a statement on its website "denying knowledge of any shady goings-on in relation to their crucial final-day clash against Levante" in the '10-11 season. The club said in the statement, "Following the reports that have emerged regarding the ongoing investigation into the Levante-Real Zaragoza match played on 21st May 2011, Real Zaragoza would like to communicate that it has absolutely no knowledge of anything connected to the allegations. The Club is at the Ministry of Justice's disposal and will cooperate with any requests made" (MARCA, 9/25).
