League Notes: Jamie Whincup Welcomes Penske's Move Into V8 Supercars

U.S. motorsport exec Roger Penske's decision to enter next year's V8 Supercars championship "has been hailed" by driver Jamie Whincup. Whincup said that the situation bears similarity to the arrival of his boss and Red Bull Racing Owner Roland Dane, "who came to Australia in 2003 to conquer V8s after several years of success in British touring cars." Whincup: "They see it as a challenge. Those blokes don't do anything by halves" (AAP, 9/24). ... British cyclist Joanna Rowsell "has rounded on British Cycling over its 'disappointing' decision not to enter any riders in the women’s individual time-trial event at the Road World Championships in Spain." Rowsell said, "I think it’s disappointing. British Cycling have their own selection policies which they adhere to and they’ve got no medal potential for the women’s title so that’s why no one’s entered. If every country took that attitude there would only be three girls at the start -- because there are only three medals" (LONDON TIMES, 9/24).
