Anti-Corruption Efforts Increase Ahead Of Cricket World Cup

New Zealand police and customs officials "have already been testing the abilities of Auckland airport staff to deal with potential match-fixers trying to enter the country for high profile sports events," according to STUFF. Security measures "are ramping up ahead of next year's Cricket World Cup" which New Zealand co-hosts with Australia and the FIFA U20 World Cup, which New Zealand hosts alone. Two senior members of the Int'l Cricket Council Anti-corruption Unit visited New Zealand last week "as part of police's preparation for the introduction of the Crimes (Match-fixing) Amendment Bill." The government "hopes to pass the bill in December to help address match-fixing risks." Superintendent Sandra Manderson, the national operation commander for Cricket World Cup 2015 and the FIFA U20 World Cup, believes that "the bill will open a new frontier for policing in New Zealand." Manderson said, "Police will now have greater powers to investigate corruption in sport in the same way that we investigate other criminal activity" (STUFF, 9/9).
