Scottish Championship Side Rangers Granted Leave To Appeal Freezing Of Club Assets

Scottish Championship side Rangers was on Tuesday granted leave to appeal the "freezing of club assets" by former Dir Imran Ahmad, according to the Scotland DAILY RECORD. The club, which "recently launched a new share issue in a desperate bid for cash," had seen some £620,000 ($997,500) "ring-fenced at a court hearing" on Friday. Judge Lord Stewart, however, said on Tuesday at the Court of Session that "granting Rangers the right to appeal will 'facilitate the raising of fresh capital' and 'also benefit both parties'" (DAILY RECORD, 9/9). The BBC reported Ahmad, who had "twice lost court bids to have Rangers' assets ring-fenced," claims he is owed £500,000 ($804,400) for negotiating deals and wants another £120,000 ($193,000) to cover legal expenses. Alan Summers, an attorney representing Rangers, told the court that Stewart "had taken a different view to two other law lords who have already examined the case and found there was no 'substantial risk' of the club going bust." Ahmad's lawyer, Kenny McBrearty, argued that Stewart "should ignore those claims because, by the club's own admission, its financial circumstances had changed since the case was heard earlier last year" (BBC, 9/9).
