Commonwealth Games Medal Winners Will Not Be Drug-Tested Like At Olympics

Medal winners at the Commonwealth Games "will not be routinely drug-tested as they would at the Olympics," according to Laura Williamson of the London DAILY MAIL. Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Mike Hooper said the event is using a "quality over quantity" approach instead, with specific sports being targeted after intelligence from anti-doping agencies. He estimated that about 1,000 random doping tests "will be conducted in Glasgow, with another 500 having been completed before the Games." Hooper said, "There is a shift away from quantity testing. It’s about smarter testing, more intelligence-based, and all the agencies like WADA (the World Anti-Doping Agency) and U.K. Anti-Doping are working together" (DAILY MAIL, 7/28).
