League Notes: Lawyer Says ASADA Could Have Breached Commonwealth Law

Former legal consultant to the Australian Football League Players Association Graham Smith claimed that "the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority could have breached Commonwealth legislation by warning it could re-issue show-cause notices." Smith, a partner with Clayton Utz and an industrial relations and employment law specialist, made the statement on Monday "after ASADA filed its defence document to the James Hird and Essendon camps on Friday." Smith said that Essendon, Hird and the players "could have grounds to lodge a complaint to the federal attorney-general" (THE AGE, 7/14). ... South Korea's ICT ministry said Monday that "it has formed a team to offer support at the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in the country by utilizing its information and communications technology." The task force "will draw up detailed plans to apply state-of-the-art technology at the sports event" (YONHAP, 7/14). ... National Rugby League side Canberra Raiders is "unlikely to lobby the NRL again to be granted a salary cap exemption" despite its outside back crisis worsening with a hamstring injury to Brenko Lee. The team had already "reached the limit" of its A$440,000 ($413,000) second-tier salary cap (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 7/14).
