Document Encourages NRL Players To Inform Clubs If Teammate Has Gambling Problem

The National Rugby League "has urged players across the code to notify their clubs if they suspect a teammate has an issue with gambling," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Manly player David Williams, suspended for the rest of the season by the NRL after being caught betting on games, "has until the end of this week to decide whether to appeal." It is understood that "he is taking legal advice and could reach a decision within the next 24 hours." The NRL called on players at each club "to sign a document outlining their requirements under their playing contract." The document "encouraged players to inform their clubs if they believe a teammate has a problem with gambling, while at the same time warning players and officials they face deregistration if they are caught betting on games." The document states, "It's critical that all your staff, officers, directors and players contacted hereby understand the NRL's prohibition on them participating or being involved in gambling" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 7/15).
