World Cup Notes: Colombian Capital Bogotá Again Bans Alcohol Ahead Of Colombia-Brazil

The Bogotá, Colombia Mayor's Office "announced that the buying, selling and consumption of alcohol will be prohibited" during Friday's quarterfinal match between Colombia and Brazil. The measure "has been implemented to prevent violent incidents." This time, "the measure will run from 10am -- the game will start at at 5pm -- to 10pm local time." On "three previous occasions during this World Cup, the city instituted alcohol bans lasting 24 hours" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 7/2). ... Sportswear brands Nike and adidas each supply the kit "for three of the eight Brazil 2014 survivors." Puma, however, "has faded from the picture, after none of its eight teams progressed beyond the Last 16 stage." The first two quarterfinals on Friday will now be classic adidas versus Nike confrontations, with France (Nike) taking on adidas (Germany) in Rio, "before hosts Brazil (Nike) play the dangerous Colombians (Adidas) in Fortaleza" (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 7/2). ... Police in São Paulo said that they "used stun grenades and tear gas" to disperse thousands of football fans raucously celebrating Argentina's 1-0 World Cup victory over Switzerland (AP, 7/2).
