Saturday's Brazil-Chile Shootout Surpasses Per-Minute Super Bowl Traffic On Twitter

Brazil's win on Saturday over Chile, which the World Cup host won with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks, "was tweeted about more than this year's Super Bowl," according to the EP. Twitter announced on Saturday that traffic on its social network reached 388,985 tweets per minute during the game, surpassing the 381,605 tweets per minute posted during the Seattle Seahawks' 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos in February. In total, "Twitter registered 16.4 million tweets during the match, surpassing the 12.2 million tweets sent out during the World Cup opener between Brazil and Croatia." In terms of total tweets, though, the Super Bowl "drew more, with a total greater than 24.9 million" (EP, 6/29).

COLOMBIA'S RODRIGUEZ SHINES: AS reported Colombia's James Rodríguez scored two goals to help his team beat Uruguay 2-0 on Saturday in the World Cup quarterfinals, making him the tournament's top scorer -- he also has two assists -- with five goals. Rodríguez is "driving not only opposing defenders crazy, but also some of the most desired women in the world." Colombian singer Shakira tweeted, "¡¡Pasamos a cuartos!! James, un gracias enorme!! ¡Hasta hoy de lo mejor del Mundial!" ("We're in the quarters!! James, a huge thanks!! So far the best in the world!"). Colombian actress Sofia Vergara, who stars on U.S. TV show Modern Family, tweeted, "Gracias mi seleccion!!!!!!" ("Thanks to my team!!!!!!"). Her tweet also "featured seven hearts and a link to a picture of Rodríguez." Rihanna, a singer born in Barbados, tweeted, "Rodriguez!!! He's just a baby!" and later added, "Cuadrado and Rodriguez. Murdaaahhh!!!!" (AS, 6/29).
