Test Reveals $13 Pimm's Sold At Wimbledon Features Lower Alcohol Concentration

Laboratory tests on glasses of alcoholic beverage Pimm's sold at Wimbledon revealed that "the concentration of Pimm’s to lemonade and melted ice was as low as one to nine" --  a third of the strength recommended by Pimm’s itself, which is one to three, according to Kate Mansey of the SUNDAY TIMES. The cost of a plastic cup of Pimm’s is £7.80 ($13) across the All England Club, a 20% increase on last year, "but the tests revealed strength variations." A bottle of Pimm’s is 25% alcohol by volume. Analysts said that "a drink made to the Pimm’s recommendation would be about 6.5% ABV." A spokesperson commenting on behalf of both the All England Club and Facilities Management Catering, the official caterer at Wimbledon, said, "The Pimm’s comes in pre-mixed sealed containers and we serve it over ice as recommended. The amount of ice in the glass will affect the dilution but you can always ask for it without ice." Pimm’s said, "In line with our perfect serve recipe, the liquid we supply is Pimm’s pre-mixed with lemonade, which has an ABV of 5.4%, and is best served over ice. We always recommend that our perfect serve is followed by all of the customers to whom we supply our pre-mixed products." More than 230,000 glasses of Pimm’s "are expected to be sold at Wimbledon this year." FMC "is owned by the Compass Group, the global catering giant" (SUNDAY TIMES, 6/29).
