Scudamore Says Manchester United Slump Has Cost Premier League Viewers

EPL CEO Richard Scudamore said that ManU’s troubles "are weighing on the rest of the English Premier League," according to Christopher Spillane of BLOOMBERG. Scudamore: “It’s a double-edged sword. When your most popular club isn’t doing as well, that costs you interest and audience in some places.” The record 20-time English champion’s performance has dipped this season under new Manager David Moyes, the replacement for Alex Ferguson, who retired following a 26-year tenure. The team faces Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Scudamore: “There’s lots of fans around the world who wish Man United were winning it again” (BLOOMBERG, 3/27). The BBC reported overseas TV deals will earn the Premier League more than £2B ($3.3B) between '13 and '16. The Premier League sold its domestic broadcasting rights to Sky and BT in a record-breaking deal, worth around £3B, last year (BBC, 3/28).
