BCCI President N. Srinivasan Losing Support In Wake Of Supreme Court Criticism

Board of Control for Cricket in India President N. Srinivasan "faced growing calls to resign from within his own ranks Wednesday," according to the AFP. In a sign that "his iron grip is dramatically loosening," BCCI VP Ravi Savant described Srinivasan’s position as “untenable." Savant: "He should step down, else the BCCI and Indian cricket will lose credibility." Another board VP, Shivlal Yadav, said the BCCI would “have to follow” the views of the court, "whose damning comments dominated media coverage less than a fortnight before a general election." World Cup-winning former cricket player Mohinder Amarnath said, “He must respect the law and do what the Supreme Court wants him to do. He needs to step down" (AFP, 3/26). In Mumbai, Vijay Tagore wrote Srinivasan "has not yet stepped down as BCCI chief but speculation is already rife" about his future at the Int'l Cricket Council. There have been calls that "he should not be allowed to take over as chairman of the world body in July this year." Internationally also, "a campaign has been initiated to prevail over the ICC to revoke the order that anoints Srinivasan as the chief of the game's governing body." It "is premature to say whether the ICC board would have change of mind and revoke the February 8 order as the Chennai strongman is believed to have stranglehold over the members of the ICC." A lot "will depend on who his successor in the BCCI is" (MUMBAI MIRROR, 3/26). The Indian BUSINESS STANDARD reported "continues to be silent on the 's observation he step aside." But sources said that Srinivasan "will continue to hold the post and wait for an order." The court has given the BCCI till Thursday, when the hearing resumes, "to reply to the observation" (BUSINESS STANDARD, 3/26).
