On-Strike Spanish Basketball League Side Bilbao Among 11 Clubs Behind On Payments

The situation of Spanish Basketball League (ACB) side Bilbao Basket, which went on strike on Monday, "is serious but not isolated," according to Jesús Pérez Ramos of MUNDO DEPORTIVO. More than "half of the league's 18 clubs -- 11 -- are not up to date on payments to their players." Some owe "small quantities, but there are others whose debts are significant." This number "has not changed in the past year." A report presented in Feb. '13 indicated "that the exact same clubs were in debt a year ago." Laboral Kutxa Vitoria, "which has been an example of good management for many years, finds itself in a situation where player payments are two months behind." Possibly "the most serious situation involves Valladolid." The club has won "only two matches this season." Spain's Superior Sports Council (CSD) said that Valladolid "has had to address its economic situation to reduce the accumulated debt and establish the foundation for a sustainable future from a financial point of view" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 3/25).
