German Pay-TV Channel Sport1 US Acquires MLB Media Rights Through '16

German pay-TV channel Sport1 US has secured MLB media rights through '16. The dedicated U.S. sports channel will show a minimum of 60 games per season starting with Saturday's season opener between the L.A. Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks from Sydney. Besides regular season games, Sport1 US will also show the MLB All-Star Game in July, as well as MLB postseason and World Series games in September and October. Sport1 US acquired platform-neutral media rights for Germany, Austria and Switzerland from MLB for three seasons. Sport1 Managing Dir Olaf Schröder said, "Sport1 US has gotten the TV triple: With Major League Baseball, we now offer all U.S. sports fans in the German speaking region the three big U.S. leagues live -- on-top of the NFL and NBA." MLB Senior VP/Int'l Operations Paul Archey said, "This new deal with Sport1 US is evidence of the growing excitement for Major League Baseball in Europe" (Sport1 US). SBD Global reached out to Sport1 for additional information on the deal, but Sport1 spokesperson Michael Röhrig declined the request. Röhrig said, "I’m afraid I can’t provide you with additional information as we won’t announce financial details" (HJ Mai, SBD Global).
